I had a passenger the other day, a young professional, and we got talking about politics, she was saying how she felt like her vote didn't count because she lived in a safe seat, I told her I knew what she meant, I've been voting Labour all my life but I didn't vote for Corbyn, and now I feel like my vote doesn't count either because the system is so rigged.

I think that's why we need to scrap first past the post, it's an old system that doesn't work for people like my passenger or me, we need something that makes every vote count, something like proportional representation, I've heard it's used in other countries and it seems to work alright, at least people feel like their vote matters.

Someone was saying the other day that Labour needs to focus on winning over Tory voters, but I'm not sure that's going to be easy when people like me, lifelong Labour supporters, are already feeling like our votes don't count. Isn't it a bit rich to expect us to convince others to join the party when we're still stuck with a voting system that makes us feel like we're shouting into the void?

Be serious, if Labour can't even convince their own lifelong voters that their vote counts, maybe the problem ain't the voting system.

I know what WillInGuildford means, I've been voting Labour all my life and it feels like my vote doesn't count when it comes to things that actually affect my life, like school funding. I see it every day at work, the state of the schools and the kids who can't afford a decent meal, it's heartbreaking.

I think that's why we need a new voting system, something that makes every vote count, like proportional representation, I've heard it works in other countries and at least people feel like their vote matters, I've got a mate who works in a school in Scotland and she says it's made a big difference up there.

I get that feeling of your vote not counting, especially in safe seats. But changing the system won't magically fix the issues causing people to feel that way, like underfunding or lack of opportunity. We need to look at the root causes, not just the symptoms.

They're talking about changing the voting system, but I reckon it's the pub closures that make people feel their local area doesn't matter anymore.

Isn't it likely that introducing proportional representation would lead to more coalition governments, which could result in a lack of clear direction and decisive action on key issues like taxation and deregulation.
