I saw this policy about prison sentences and it got me thinking. While I agree we need a fairer system, I reckon the focus should be way broader than just the courts. We're talking about a society that often pushes people to the margins, and then we're surprised when things go wrong. Instead of just tweaking sentencing, we need to tackle the real issues that lead to crime in the first place, like lack of opportunity and environmental degradation.
Imagine if we invested the money currently spent on warehousing people in our communities instead. Think about funding for green jobs training, affordable housing, and mental health support – things that actually build people up and prevent them from ending up in trouble. That’s how you get rehabilitation, not by locking people up and throwing away the key. It’s about creating a society where everyone has a stake and a chance.

We need practical solutions. My apprentice, bless her, is struggling with childcare costs, and that’s a real barrier for her. If the government could sort something sensible out for that, it would help her keep her job and help me keep a good member of staff.
