The debate around affordable energy is crucial, but framing it as a choice between people's livelihoods and environmental responsibility is a tired, false dichotomy. We absolutely need a national energy policy that puts affordability and security first, but the path to achieving this lies in embracing truly sustainable solutions, not clinging to outdated fossil fuels or unreliable nuclear power. The focus should be on rapidly scaling up proven, cost-effective renewables and investing massively in smart grid technology and energy storage.
Suggesting we should abandon renewables because of current bill levels ignores the fact that the fluctuating costs are often tied to volatile global fossil fuel markets and the massive subsidies still propping up polluting industries.
