Leave my tax allowance alone, Andy. It’s not rocket science.

It’s frankly insulting that they even toy with the idea of fiddling with the tax-free allowance. It feels like they think we’re all stupid, just waiting for them to decide how much of our own money we’re allowed to keep. Carol and I work hard, and it grinds my gears when politicians talk about ‘tax breaks’ as if it’s some sort of gift from on high. It’s our money, earned through our own effort. The idea of freezing it in the first place, and then suggesting an increase, just shows how out of touch they are with what people actually need.

What we actually need is some common sense. If the economy’s supposedly doing so well that they can afford to increase the allowance, then just do it. Don’t announce it with a fanfare and then backtrack. It’s not a negotiation. It’s about people being able to manage their own households without the government constantly breathing down their necks.

I see this all the time in the DIY store, people struggling to make ends meet, and the last thing they need is the government taking more of their money. I had a customer just the other day, a tradesman, who was telling me he's barely scraping by due to all the extra taxes and fees he's paying.

It's just common sense, if the government's got the money to increase the tax-free allowance, they should just do it, no fuss, no fanfare. People need to be able to keep their own money to manage their households, it's not rocket science. Enough is enough, let people keep what they've earned.
