Let's Get Proper People in Charge of Town Hall Jobs

It’s all well and good talking about diplomats, chuck, but what about the people running things right here in Grimsby? We’ve got council positions that seem to go to whoever’s got the loudest voice or the right mates, not necessarily the ones who actually know how to fix our potholes or sort out the bus routes.

My idea is simple, love. Before anyone gets a big job at the council, or managing one of these new community projects, they should have to stand up in front of us, the people they’re meant to be serving. No fancy jargon, just tell us what they’re going to do and how they’ll make life better for families in this town. We need people who understand what it’s like to struggle, not someone who’s just looking for a way to get their name in the paper.

And it shouldn’t just be a quick chat. There should be proper questions from people who live here, who see the problems day in, day out.

I think it's a good idea to have council candidates answer to the public, but how would this actually work in practice, would it be a formal debate or more of a Q&A session. Would people be able to ask questions in advance or just turn up on the day. This could be a great way to hold them to account but it needs to be well organised to be effective.

What happens if the people asking questions are all really well-off and just want to complain about their bins being collected late?

I think the idea of having council candidates answer to the public is a good one, but it's not just about who's asking the questions, it's also about who's able to turn up to these meetings in the first place. In our area, for example, a lot of parents are working multiple jobs just to make ends meet, so they wouldn't be able to attend a meeting in the evening, which means their voices wouldn't be heard. Would these meetings be held at times that are actually accessible to working-class people, or would it just be the same old faces showing up anyway?
