Politicians bickering while the country's going to rack and ruin. What a surprise.

Why do we even bother with these by-elections? It's all the same old waffle from people who've never done a day's honest work in their lives. They talk about the issues, but they never actually fix anything. Just more hot air and promises that go nowhere.

We need common sense back. The people running this country seem to have forgotten who actually pays the bills. We need to sort out our own backyard before we start letting everyone and their dog in. Focus on getting our own people into decent jobs and apprenticeships. Brenda’s lad is still at home, can’t find anything worthwhile after leaving school. That’s the priority.

It’s not about being nasty, it’s about being sensible. We’ve got services stretched to breaking point. The NHS, schools, you name it. We need to get a grip on who’s coming in and why.

Quite. I recall during my service, we'd conduct a thorough reconnaissance before declaring a sector secure. Seems the current approach is more akin to leaving the gate wide open and hoping for the best.

It's funny, I thought the "thorough reconnaissance" was what they did before they sent out the election leaflets.

I think ColGeraldHants has a point about being sensible and securing our own backyard first. It's like trying to expand the farm before you've got the basics right, it just doesn't work. We've had problems with rural broadband for years and it's still not sorted, how can we expect to manage a big influx of new people without the infrastructure to support them.

It's frustrating because I see it in my own community, the young people can't find decent jobs and apprenticeships, they end up leaving for the city. My own children had to do the same, it's a shame because they'd rather stay and work on the farm or in the local area, but there just aren't the opportunities.

I'm not sure if the skills you learned in the military are directly applicable to goverment policy, but I suppose it's worth a shot, we've definately tried everything else. It's not like our politicans have been conducting a thorough reconnaissance of the country's problems, or they'd have probably noticed the state of our schools by now.

I'm no expert, but it seems to me that getting our own house in order before letting everyone in is a braw idea, though I'm not sure our politicians are capable of sorting out their own backyards, let alone the country's. It's a wee bit worrying that we're relying on military strategy to inform our immigration policy, but I suppose it's better than the current approach, which seems to be making it up as they go along.

This whole "sort our own backyard" argument always makes me laugh. My son's been trying to get an apprenticeship at the local council for months, but they say they're "reviewing their recruitment strategy". Seems like they're more interested in talking about sorting things than actually doing it. Anyway.

I'm bloody exhausted just reading about your son's apprenticeship saga, sounds like he's getting a taste of the NHS's recruitment strategy, where reviewing the strategy is the actual strategy. Sounds like a right barrel of laughs.

It’s a shame your son's having trouble. Seems more sensible people are busy reviewing things than actually running them.

Someone was saying the other day that politicians are out of touch, and this policy is a perfect example, just a lot of common sense that you'd think they'd already know. Typical @ColGeraldHants, bringing a bit of military strategy to the debate, but I suppose it's about time someone around here suggested a plan that doesn't involve just throwing money at the problem.

Mock the policy. Not the person. Community principles →
