It absolutely baffles me why anyone thinks letting people out of prison early is a good idea. It’s not just about saving a few quid — it’s about public safety, plain and simple. We’ve seen what happens when these things go wrong, and it’s always the ordinary folk in places like Grimsby who pay the price. They talk about "unprecedented pressure" on probation, but whose fault is that? They cut services to the bone then act surprised when things fall apart.
Instead of these daft schemes, the government needs to properly fund probation and rehabilitation services. I’m talking about real investment, not just sticking plasters. Get people working with local businesses — like mine, we’ve always taken on a local lad who needed a chance — give them skills, get them into proper jobs.
