Honestly, the state of our roads is a disgrace. Every time I leave the house, it feels like I'm driving through a never-ending obstacle course of cones and diversions. It’s not just inconvenient; it’s costing us all time and money. My father, bless him, was always meticulous about keeping the local roads maintained when he was on the council, and it made such a difference. This constant patching and digging feels like a complete waste of taxpayer money, with no long-term vision.
We need a complete overhaul of how road maintenance is managed. Instead of these piecemeal repairs that seem to get undone almost immediately, we should be looking at comprehensive resurfacing projects, planned years in advance. This would involve identifying major routes needing work and scheduling it during off-peak times or overnight to minimise disruption.

I was trying to get to my daughter Sarah’s house in Leeds last week, and a simple twenty-mile stretch took over an hour because of three separate sets of roadworks, none of which seemed to be happening. Planning it properly, like they used to, would save us all so much aggravation and, I suspect, a good deal of money too.
