Enough with the "levelling up" nonsense. Let's actually balance the books.
I was down in Dover last week visiting my sister, and you can't help but notice the strain. So many new faces, and frankly, it feels like the local infrastructure is creaking under the pressure. The shops are packed, the buses are full, and you wonder how much longer it can all be sustained without proper planning and, more importantly, the funding to match. It's not about being unwelcoming, it's about being realistic.
This brings me to what I think is the core economic issue we're facing: the complete lack of fiscal discipline masquerading as "investment." For years now, we've been told that throwing money at grand projects, often with questionable returns, is the way forward. "Levelling up" was the latest iteration of this flawed thinking. It sounds good, but where's the tangible benefit to the taxpayer?
Enough is enough: Foreign aid needs to serve British interests first, not just global virtue signalling.
With all due respect, does anyone actually understand why we send billions in foreign aid every year, often to countries that openly oppose us or where the money just disappears? It’s baffling. We have struggling communities here in Tunbridge Wells, let alone across the UK, yet we’re told we must meet arbitrary spending targets for nations thousands of miles away, often with very little to show for it apart from a warm feeling amongst certain bureaucrats. It just doesn't make good financial sense, and frankly, it feels rather naive.
My proposal is simple: foreign aid must be directly tied to tangible British national interests. No more unconditional handouts. If we are providing aid, it should come with clear conditions for economic cooperation, trade deals that benefit our businesses, or security agreements that enhance our safety.
