Enough with the endless testing - kids need actual learning, not exam cramming!

I'm sick to death of hearing about league tables and SATs results dominating every education conversation. It feels like we're just churning out kids who are brilliant at ticking boxes for Ofsted but have no idea how to think critically or solve real-world problems. My own kids are subjected to this pressure, and honestly, it’s exhausting for them and us. They should be exploring, getting messy, and actually enjoying learning, not just dreading the next assessment.

My proposal is to scrap the current high-stakes standardized testing regime entirely. Instead, schools should focus on continuous assessment integrated into the learning process. Think project-based work, portfolios, and teacher observations that actually reflect a student’s understanding and development over time.

I had a passenger the other day, a teacher, and she said the only thing they're teaching kids these days is how to pass exams, not how to get to the pub without using their phone, that's the real education we're lacking. Scrap the tests and all that, but what's the bet the schools just find another way to make a right old mess of it.
