I think the idea of giving local councils more autonomy is a good one, but it's not just about handing them more power, it's about cutting the bureaucratic nonsense that holds them back. If we really want to let local people make their own decisions, we need to reduce the regulatory burden on councils and let them raise their own funds. That way, they can actually respond to the needs of their community without having to beg for permission from Whitehall.

The problem with the current system is that it's all about centrally dictated targets and box-ticking exercises, rather than actually delivering services that people need. And that's because councils are so dependent on central government funding, they have to do what they're told or risk losing their cash.
