Get Benefits Right, Not Just Tight

I've always thought the benefits system needs a bit of a shake-up, and this idea of linking payments to job search activity has some merit. The problem is, it's all a bit too Big Brother for my taste. We don't need some fancy digital tracking system to tell us who's genuinely looking for work. What we need is a bit of common sense and some proper, old-fashioned job centres with people who can actually help.

What I'd propose is a more localised approach, where job centres have the power to make decisions based on the specific needs of their area. If someone's struggling to find work because of a lack of skills, then let's get them on a course that'll actually help. And if someone's just not bothering, then maybe their benefits should be reduced. But we need to be careful not to punish people who are genuinely trying. It's about finding a balance between supporting those who need it and encouraging people to get back to work.

Properly staffed job centres and actually effective skills courses

Yes, and imagine if they actually knew how to do their jobs, rather than just shuffling paper. Revolutionary, I know.
