I get the frustration about subsidies, especially when energy bills are so high. Seeing all those expensive solar arrays on some houses does make you wonder where the taxpayer money is going, particularly when you think about small businesses or people struggling with their heating. It feels a bit unfair if the benefits are only going to those who can afford the initial outlay.
But just pulling the plug on solar subsidies entirely feels like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The technology is certainly mature, but the upfront cost is still a massive barrier for a lot of households, not just the wealthy ones. If we want to move towards cleaner energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, we need to make it accessible.
Instead of outright scrapping subsidies, maybe we should rethink how they're targeted.
