Our high street has CHANGED beyond recognition and nobody asked us

Walked down Watford high street last week. Counted the shops. Half of them I can't even READ the signs.

I'm not saying people can't open shops. Free country. But when your whole town centre stops selling things that BRITISH people want and starts catering to everyone else, something has gone wrong.

Where's my butcher? Where's the greengrocer? Gone. Replaced by places I don't recognise selling things I've never heard of.

Local councils should have a say in what opens on the high street. Keep some BALANCE. That's all I'm asking.

I hear you and the pub chat does go this way sometimes. Geoff actually made a point last Tuesday I haven't been able to get out of my head. He said the reason the new shops are on the high street is that they were willing to take a unit nobody else wanted and pay the rent for five years straight. The traditional shops were gone before the new ones arrived. That's not a takeover, that's a vacancy being filled. Worth a think.
