make public transport free already

I think we should just make all public transport free, it's not that complicated. This is needed because the current system is so expensive and inconvenient that it's basically forcing people to drive or take taxis, which is terrible for the environment and our cities. we need to reduce our carbon emissions and making public transport free would be a big step in the right direction.

we could pay for it by increasing taxes on the wealthy and big corporations, they can afford it and it's about time they contributed to the system that helps them make their money. it's also not like it's unheard of, there are cities around the world that have already made their public transport free and it's worked out pretty well for them. it's time for us to catch up and make our cities more sustainable and equitable.

This sounds like a nice idea in theory, but I suspect the numbers don't quite add up. If fares are eliminated, someone has to cover the operational costs. Will the proposed tax increases on the wealthy and corporations actually generate enough revenue to maintain service levels, let alone expand them as would likely be needed with increased demand? I remember reading about a pilot program in a smaller European city that ended up with significantly reduced service frequency because the funding model couldn't keep pace.
