make public transport free for all
we should make all public transport free to use, funded by taxing big corporations and the wealthy, this would not only help the environment by reducing the number of cars on the road but also help low income families who struggle to pay for transport costs.
it's ridiculous that in a country as wealthy as the uk we still have people who can't afford to get to work or visit their families because of transport costs, and it's even more ridiculous that we're still relying on cars and fossil fuels to get around when we know how much damage they're causing to the planet.
making public transport free would also make our cities more livable, by reducing traffic and air pollution, and it would make it easier for people to get around without having to own a car, which would be a huge benefit for people like me who are trying to live more sustainably.
make environmental ed compulsory already
i was talking to a friend who's a teacher and she was saying how she had to fight to get a single lesson on climate change into the curriculum, it's ridiculous that kids aren't being taught about the most pressing issue of our time. she had to argue with the head of department just to get a small module on sustainability, it's like they don't think it's relevant or something.
i think it's time we made environmental education compulsory in all schools, from primary to secondary level. it's not just about teaching kids about recycling and saving energy, it's about giving them a deeper understanding of the natural world and how human actions affect it. we need to be teaching kids about the impact of pollution, deforestation, and climate change, and how they can make a difference.
make public transport free already
I think we should just make all public transport free, it's not that complicated. This is needed because the current system is so expensive and inconvenient that it's basically forcing people to drive or take taxis, which is terrible for the environment and our cities. we need to reduce our carbon emissions and making public transport free would be a big step in the right direction.
we could pay for it by increasing taxes on the wealthy and big corporations, they can afford it and it's about time they contributed to the system that helps them make their money. it's also not like it's unheard of, there are cities around the world that have already made their public transport free and it's worked out pretty well for them. it's time for us to catch up and make our cities more sustainable and equitable.
green defence, not just greenwashing
i think we should be talking about reducing defence spending overall, not just making the current budget more efficient. it's crazy that we're still pouring so much money into the military when there are so many other pressing issues that need funding, like renewable energy and sustainable housing. we need to be thinking about how we can scale back our military presence and focus on diplomacy and cooperation instead.
the original idea of zero-based budgeting is okay, i guess, but it doesn't really get at the root of the problem. we need to be asking whether our defence spending is actually making us safer, or if it's just lining the pockets of arms manufacturers. and let's be real, a lot of our defence spending is still tied up in outdated programmes and projects that don't even make sense in the modern world.
Time to Get Serious About Climate
i'm so over the circus in westminster, but let's be real, it's not just about being serious for the sake of it, it's about tackling the climate crisis and that's what's really at stake. our government needs to get its act together and start making decisions that actually benefit the planet, not just big corporations.
i work in a zero-waste shop and see every day how people are trying to make a difference, but we need systemic change, not just individual actions. our export industries, especially food and drink, need to be rethought with sustainability in mind, not just profit. we can't keep prioritizing economic growth over environmental protection, it's just not working.
the green party has been saying this for years, but it feels like no one is listening. we need to take a more radical approach to climate policy, one that actually puts the planet first.
energy not emergency services: invest in communities not cops
i get what they’re saying about needing to focus on community stuff instead of just policing. but calling it ‘green energy’ feels a bit tacked on. the real issue is that everything costs a fortune and people can’t afford to live, let alone pay huge energy bills.
we need a proper plan for energy that actually helps people. think community-owned solar farms, not just slapping panels on existing buildings which still leaves renters out. and local energy grids are great, but they need to be run by the community, not just another private company making a profit. imagine if the money spent on police patrols actually went into insulating homes or setting up heat pump schemes.
and let's be real, this 'self-sufficient society' bit is nice, but it won't happen if people are still worried about getting evicted or if their benefits get cut.
Scrap the rent madness already
i'm so sick of hearing about the economy growing when i can barely afford my rent, it's like they're speaking a different language. i work part-time in a zero-waste shop and i'm barely scraping by, sharing a flat with three others just to make ends meet. it's not like we're living large or anything, we're just trying to get by without drowning in debt.
i'd change the whole system so that housing is actually affordable for people like me, not just some distant dream. that means rent control, and not just token efforts either, i mean proper controls that stop landlords from price gouging. and we need to be building more social housing, not just luxury flats for people who don't even live here. it's not rocket science, just basic human decency.
the thing that really gets my goat is when politicians talk about the economy like it's some abstract thing that doesn't affect real people.
