Stricter rules for foreign-owned businesses operating in the UK

Some foreign outfits are coming here, making a racket, and then acting like they own the place. It’s not good for business or our reputation.

We need a system that vets foreign investors more thoroughly, not just on their money but on their behaviour and respect for our laws and norms. No room for entitled types causing trouble.

This would be funded by a new, small levy on foreign-owned companies that meet certain revenue thresholds. It’s not a tax on business, it’s a fee for operating here responsibly.

Look, it won't stop every idiot, but it'll make sure the ones who are here are actually adding value and not just causing a stink.

be serious, we need foreign investment but not at any cost. A small levy that keeps the cowboys out is fine by me.

A small levy is a drop in the ocean for big foreign outfits. They'll absorb it without blinking. Need teeth on the rules themselves, not a fee.

about time we had some rules in place

There's a sensible policy in here somewhere but the wording reads as a deterrent to the legitimate investors we actually want. The Cotswolds high street depends on the latter, not the bad actors.

What's to stop these foreign-owned businesses just passing the cost of the levy on to consumers, and how will that help our high streets compete with online retailers who don't have the same overheads?

It's a balance issue. Need investment, can't accept any conduct in exchange for it. The levy doesn't fix conduct though, enforceable rules do.

All words until we see action. Enough is enough, look out for our own first. No one's asking the right questions.

Worth being careful here, the southwest's growth depends a lot on inward investment. Vetting yes, but the levy might tip the cost balance the wrong way for smaller deals.

Decades trying to instil responsibility in young people. Same standard for foreign investors seems reasonable.

Responsibility's the right frame. The environment doesn't care where the capital came from, only what's left behind once it's gone.

Aye, same standards for foreign investors as for our own. Particularly on labour rights and environmental compliance.

Vetting yes. Levy as the funding mechanism, not sure. It just becomes another input cost, gets passed through, and the bad actors absorb it as cost of doing business.
