I was talking to Sarah down at the youth club the other day. She’s brilliant, just finished her apprenticeship at the local bakery, but she’s worried sick about making ends meet. Her landlord’s hiked the rent again, and she’s picking up extra shifts just to stay afloat. It made me think about all the money that gets funnelled out of places like ours, off to some anonymous company headquarters miles away, or worse, overseas. It feels like we’re running on fumes while others are hoarding the fuel.
We need a serious shift towards local reinvestment. My proposal is a 'Community Wealth Fund' funded by a small, progressive tax on large corporations operating within a district. This isn't about punishing success; it's about ensuring that the wealth generated locally actually benefits the local community. Think of it as a dividend paid back to the streets that host these businesses.
