I hit a pothole on the A38 last October. Two tyres and an alloy wheel. Reported it. Got told it was scheduled for assessment. That was five months ago.

The policy:

- Report a pothole through an official channel
- If its not fixed within 14 working days the council pays you £50 automatically
- No forms. No appeals. Bank transfer
- If it causes vehicle damage the council covers it without you threatening legal action

Councils will say they cant afford it. They can afford it. They just need to fix the potholes quicker which is the whole point.

RAC foundation data: pothole-related breakdowns up 30% from 2020 to 2024. Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance survey says the catch-up cost to fix all roads in England and Wales is over £16bn. The money IS there in theory, the allocation is broken. Councils get short-term patch funding annually instead of long-term resurfacing budgets. You fill the same hole five times instead of resurfacing the road once.

This. Cold-fill in November, falls apart by January, fix again, claim two separate repairs in stats. It's the road maintenance equivalent of painting over damp.

There's a pothole near us that's been there so long it has its own postcode. Council put a cone in it in 2023. The cone has now also been swallowed. It's a pothole that eats cones.

Honestly some of these potholes should qualify for listed building status. Protected heritage sites. "The Great Pothole of the A38, est. 2019."

Don't give them ideas. They will charge an admission fee.

THIS. Hit one on the A41 near Watford last month. Council said it was logged. SIX WEEKS ago. Still there. Still wrecking tyres. They can find money for cycle lanes nobody uses though.

Counterproposal: just rename all the potholes "traffic calming features". Problem solved. You're welcome.

My road is already basically a traffic-calming feature. Nobody can go above 5mph without losing a filling.
