As a long-time advocate for sensible policy, I am dismayed by the prevailing approach to energy production, which often prioritises ideology over pragmatism. The notion that we can abruptly transition to a fully green energy system is not only unrealistic but also potentially damaging to our economy and the most vulnerable members of society.
A more measured approach is required, one that acknowledges the importance of energy security and affordability while still pursuing our environmental goals. This can be achieved by investing in research and development of cleaner energy technologies, such as carbon capture and storage, and exploring ways to make our existing infrastructure more efficient. Furthermore, we must ensure that our energy policy is guided by a commitment to social justice, protecting those who would be disproportionately affected by drastic changes to our energy landscape.
