01 Healthcare

Scrap the NHS Bureaucracy Already

I was at the hospital last week visiting a friend who's been struggling with chronic pain and it was appalling to see how many administrators were wandering around while the nurses were run off their feet. My friend's been waiting months for a referral to a specialist and it's all because of some delay in the system. I couldn't help but think of all the times I had to deal with red tape when I was a headmistress, trying to get things done for the kids in my school.

I remember when I first started out, the NHS was a place where people went to get help, not to get lost in a sea of paperwork. Now it seems like the bureaucrats have taken over and the doctors and nurses are just trying to keep up. I've heard stories from my daughter, who's a solicitor, about people who have been left to suffer because some faceless administrator decided that their treatment wasn't "cost-effective".

02 Transport

Enough is enough! Our trains are a national disgrace.

It's utterly infuriating. Every time I need to visit my daughter in London, I face the same dismal experience: delays, cancellations, and overcrowded carriages. You'd think a country that pioneered railways would manage to run them halfway decently by now. Instead, we have a system that seems designed to frustrate passengers and reward incompetence. It’s a symptom of a deeper malaise, where vital public services are treated as playthings for profit or ideological dogma, rather than as essential infrastructure for the nation.

My proposal is straightforward: renationalisation, but with a crucial difference. This isn't about returning to the old British Rail model wholesale. It’s about creating a public trust, run by experienced professionals, not politicians or fat-cat executives. This trust would have a clear mandate: reliable, affordable, and punctual service for all.

03 Justice & law

Scrap the soft justice nonsense

What's the point of having a justice system if it doesn't actually punish people for breaking the law, I mean think about it, we've got career criminals walking out of court with a slap on the wrist and a warning, it's absurd.

The problem is that the system is more concerned with rehabilitation than actual justice, which sounds nice in theory but doesn't exactly fill you with confidence when you're the victim of a crime. My proposal is to introduce mandatory minimum sentences for repeat offenders, so if you're caught committing the same crime multiple times, you know exactly what you're getting.

This would not only act as a deterrent, but it would also give victims and their families some sense of closure, knowing that the person who hurt them is actually being held accountable. I've seen it time and time again, people getting let off with a warning or a fine, and it's just not good enough, we need to take a tougher stance on crime.

04 Energy

A Balanced Energy Approach is Needed

As a long-time advocate for sensible policy, I am dismayed by the prevailing approach to energy production, which often prioritises ideology over pragmatism. The notion that we can abruptly transition to a fully green energy system is not only unrealistic but also potentially damaging to our economy and the most vulnerable members of society.

A more measured approach is required, one that acknowledges the importance of energy security and affordability while still pursuing our environmental goals. This can be achieved by investing in research and development of cleaner energy technologies, such as carbon capture and storage, and exploring ways to make our existing infrastructure more efficient. Furthermore, we must ensure that our energy policy is guided by a commitment to social justice, protecting those who would be disproportionately affected by drastic changes to our energy landscape.
