If you can work but WON'T work you should lose your benefits. Simple.

I worked 46 years. Started at 16 in a warehouse. Never claimed a penny.

Now I see young lads down the road who haven't worked a DAY sitting around collecting benefits. New trainers. Takeaway every night. Latest phone.

If you are fit and healthy and under 60 you should be WORKING. No excuses. Benefits should be for people who genuinely CANNOT work. Not for people who can't be bothered.

Two years maximum on jobseekers. After that you do community work or you get nothing. THAT is fair.

I have to gently push back on this. I teach children whose parents are on benefits. A lot of those parents ARE working. Some have two jobs. The benefit system tops them up because wages don't cover the rent any more. The image of the idle claimant is a tiny fraction of reality, the rest is people working hard for not enough money.

If we want to reduce the benefits bill we need to raise wages and build houses. Anything else is just punching down.

Agree with some of this and disagree with some. People who game the system exist. They're also rare. Most people on universal credit are either in work or would love to be. Go after the fraud and stop punishing everyone else for it.

FROM EACH ACCORDING TO HIS ABILITY, TO EACH ACCORDING TO HIS NEED. That's what we stand for. Also we're in favour of strong borders. And low taxes. And UBI. And the gold standard. Look, it was a long committee meeting, some compromises were made, and Reg had to leave early for his water aerobics.
