Fair Rates for Local Businesses

As a Labour supporter I think it's high time we looked at business rates and how they're affecting our local businesses. The current system is outdated and doesn't take into account the actual performance of businesses. We need a fairer system that gives small businesses and startups a chance to thrive.

I agree that a tiered system based on actual performance and local economic conditions is the way forward. But we also need to look at how we're funding our councils and make sure they have the resources they need to support local businesses. This could be done by increasing funding from central government or by giving councils more power to raise their own funds. We should also be looking at ways to reduce the burden of business rates on small businesses, such as by increasing the threshold for relief or by introducing a more progressive system of taxation.

Scrap the Green Belt Sell Off

I was out walking with my kids in the Wirral countryside last weekend and we stumbled upon a sign that said a big chunk of the green belt was up for sale to developers. It made my blood boil, to be honest. The green belt is what keeps our area from becoming just another sprawling mess of housing estates and supermarkets. My parents used to take me on walks in the same spot when I was a kid, and now I'm taking my own kids there, and I want to make sure it's still there for their kids one day.

I started thinking about all the times politicians have promised to protect the green belt, only to turn around and sell it off to the highest bidder. It's like they think we're all just going to forget about it. But we shouldn't forget, because once it's gone, it's gone for good.
